GOODWILL HISTORY IN THE U.S.
Goodwill was founded in 1902 in Boston by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister who hired the poor to mend and repair used goods. Helms described Goodwill Industries as an “industrial program as well as a social service enterprise” that has flourished into a network of 162 independent, local Goodwills that form a $5.59 billion international. There are four Bay Area Goodwill agencies which employ and provide employment services to thousands of Bay Area residents.
